Williams | "We are disappointed"

Jonny

Jonny Williams scored his first goal of the season on Saturday against MK Dons, but it proved to be a consolation in Gillingham’s 3-2 defeat and the midfielder stated how disappointed the dressing room was having nearly secured a point from the game.

Gills fell behind to an early goal, which meant they had to work their way back into the game. Williams credited the fight in the team, but knows they need to stop that trend.

The former Wales international scored in the fourth minute of added time with a fine finish. He is hopeful that he can build off that goal and contribute more as the season develops.

There were 1,375 Gillingham supporters at Stadium MK, and Williams praised the fans for the incredible support they continue to give the team.

Thoughts on the game…

I thought that there wasn’t much in it in the first half. We can’t afford to keep conceding early. I think that in the last three games, we have started poorly. We were really hot on making sure that we had a good start. Unfortunately, it has hit Sam and goes in. You’re thinking, ‘It’s happened again’, but there is huge fight in this team.

I thought that we came out, and we sorted out a few bits with Dobbo [Richard Dobson] and Pete [Gill] at half-time, and we started the second half really well. I think that we had a 15-minute spell where we should have scored and equalised. We can’t afford to go two or three nil down, because we gave ourselves a huge mountain to climb.

On his goal…

I probably don’t go for many diagonals, but it was a great pass from Sam [Gale]. He gave me one before at 3-0, which I probably should’ve scored. It was probably the easier chance, but we need to keep getting into those positions. It was great to hit the back of the net and give us a chance of getting something in the last two or three minutes.

Hopefully, long may that continue, and I keep getting into the box and into the right areas, and hopefully add a few more.

The team’s mindset and looking forward…

Coming to MK Dons, we know it’s always going to be a tough game. We know that they’re a good side, and I’m sure that they’ll be feeling the same about us. There’s definitely a change in the mentality of this team. We want to win every game. It would’ve been great to get a point from where we were in the second half, at 3-0 down.

We’re a disappointed group in there. We haven’t really tasted many defeats recently, so to go back-to-back, we have got to put a line under it and focus on what we did do well and do that as much as we can against Cheltenham next week.

On another fantastic away following…

It’s absolutely amazing. They’re a huge reason as to why we get back into the game, and why we push on and nearly get an equaliser. It’s absolutely phenomenal to have that support in League Two. Hopefully, we can make them proud. They’ve travelled unbelievably well since I’ve been here, and hopefully, there are some really good times ahead for them.
