Ollie Wright believes that there was a reaction from the Gills squad after the defeat at York City, but they just lacked the killer final touch in their 0-0 draw with Newport County on Saturday.
The Southampton loanee was pleased to have earned a clean sheet, a third successive one at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium, crediting the defensive efforts of the team. He discussed the difficulty of having to break opposition down at home, knowing that if the Gills continue to do their thing, the goals will come.
Wright missed the pre-season and opening fixtures due to an injury, but has been in goal ever since, with Andy Smith, Omar Beckles and Logan Dobbs in front of him creating a settled defensive four. The goalkeeper has called upon them to continue doing the basics well to keep their solid defensive form going.
His post-match thoughts...
I think that we had a positive reaction from last week. I think that was the main thing today to show the fans, and as a team, last week wasn't good, so putting this week right was key, and I think that we did. The only thing that we were lacking was the goal.
Defensively and, myself, it is always nice getting a clean sheet, especially in front of the home fans. I think that we were really good today defensively. It was just trying to put the ball in the back of the net, but when teams come and they sit in, it is really hard to break teams down. We have to keep doing our thing, keep playing, and the goals will come.
Settling in so far this season.
I feel really good. I feel like I am in the flow of things now. I think that it is my seventh game, so I feel really good.
Obviously, with Becks [Omar Beckles] at the back bringing the experience to the back three with Smudge [Andy Smith] and Logan [Dobbs], we have been really solid so far this year. Our defensive record has been really good. I think that this is the fourth clean sheet that we have had, so we have to keep going, doing our bit and keep doing the basics well.
On Tom Eaves joining the Football Club...
He has been a really good addition to the changing room. He brings loads of experience, and I think that he is going to be really good for us this year.
