Gaffer | "We deserved something out of the game"

Gaffer

Gareth Ainsworth was disappointed with the goal that his team conceded in the 1-0 defeat at Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.

Gillingham had several chances but could not break the deadlock before Adrien Thibaut scored the only goal of the game from a long free-kick directed towards the Gills penalty area, which left Ainsworth frustrated with the manner in which the goal came.

The Gills boss discussed the use of a different formation, thanked the fans for their unwavering support and looked ahead to another tough test in midweek at Chesterfield.

Verdict on the game…

We deserved something out of the game today. We had the better chances, and then we concede a set piece, and I can’t keep going on about conceding set pieces because it’s not good enough.

In the first-half, I thought that we were very good. We looked dangerous. Their keeper has made an unbelievable save, and Garath McCleary has had one off the line. It’s the same story.

You think that you deserve something out of the game, and if you don’t get that, then go home with a 0-0. Because I don’t remember, apart from Tommi O’Reilly in the second-half when he went through and had a shot on target because we were going for it, I can’t remember a shot on target for them, except that one, when we’re trying to get back in the game.

It’s frustrating because we go home with a 0-0 and go, ‘thanks for the point.’ But we don’t. We somehow go back with nothing. I am gutted for the boys because they gave everything.

We can keep saying that we have had the better chances, but we have got to be better at set pieces. We can’t let them in because they are a big part of the game.

The formation used in the game…

We went with a 4-4-2 with Armani [Little] breaking on that left wing, and I thought that he did well. I thought that we had a good shape in the first-half and created plenty of chances, but unfortunately, Crewe scored a set piece, and you have to defend them.

The travelling support…

To the fans, thank you. You never stopped singing, even at 1-0 down. I appreciate that, and I see that.

Looking to Chesterfield…

It’s a big game Tuesday. We have got to make these games count because we will start running out of games. I don’t want to run out of games.

I am still confident in these boys that they can go and beat any team in the league. I really do. That includes Chesterfield on Tuesday. We will have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down, no one will feel sorry for themselves, and just get on with it, and defend set pieces better than we did today.

[Whether there will be changes]- There could be, because of the legs. Ronan [Hale] has come in, and Garath McCleary and Sam Vokes are playing. These are experienced players that we might have to look at where their legs are. I’m not saying that I will change them.
