Gaffer | "We need to take our moments"

Gaffer

Gareth Ainsworth reiterated the need for Gillingham to seize their big moments in games following the 2-0 New Year’s Day defeat at Swindon Town.

The hosts were clinical when their opportunities came, scoring twice during the second-half. Ainsworth was left lamenting the fact that Gills had plenty of opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but were unable to capitalise, knowing that it is something his team must start doing.

The Gills boss was grateful to the 896 supporters who made the trip to the County Ground, and looked ahead to Sunday’s fixture at Notts County.

Post-match thoughts…

We are becoming this team that out-stats the opposition, apart from the stat that matters, and that is the goals. I’d take the goals over anything at the moment. We want to win so bad.

We had the better of the first-half, without a doubt. In the second-half, we created so many chances, and how we haven’t scored... They took their moments. This is what I keep saying, you have to take your moments. There was sloppy defending, definitely, but they took their moments. That’s the story, and that has been the story here for a few years.

That is what I am trying to address with the window coming up. I’m hoping to be able to get some new faces in and shake it up a bit, but the players out there were good enough today. They were good enough to win the game, but a 2-0 defeat doesn’t tell the whole story, but it tells a story enough that says we have to start taking our chances. Otherwise, we are going to sink into a mediocre season with nothing to play for, and I don’t want that.

The fantastic travelling support…

The fans were brilliant, again. They were absolutely brilliant, and I feel for them because they came in their numbers. They never stopped singing. Even at 1-0 down, they kept going, and at 2-0 down, they kept going. Thank you.

Shifting the focus to Notts County…

We have got a game in three days. We can’t lie down now and feel sorry for ourselves; we have got to dust ourselves off. I changed the team up today with five changes, and I thought that the energy was there, definitely in the first-half, without a doubt.

[On squad rotation] - You get to the fourth game in 11 days, and you are going to have to turn things around. One or two of them have run their socks off today, and we will have to have a look at that, but I am pleased with where we are from a fitness and injury point of view.
