Williams | "It is tough to take"

Jonny

Jonny Williams knows that Gillingham need to start taking advantage of their moments in games following the 2-0 defeat at Swindon Town on New Year's Day.

The former Wales international was pleased to be back in the starting XI, but knows that winning trumps everything.

There were 896 Gillingham supporters in attendance at the County Ground, and Williams says the group is determined to start repaying their support with victories.

The former Crystal Palace man says full focus is now on getting a positive result against Notts County this Sunday.

On the game...

I thought that we were good in the first-half, but we have to score in the moments that we had. We created a number of opportunities today, and I think that they had two shots on target and scored two goals. That seems to be the way at the moment. We are getting punished.

We played well for a number of minutes, 70 to 75 minutes throughout that game, where even in the second-half, the ball didn't drop a number of times in the end. They defended well, and fair play to them. That is probably why they are top two in the league, because they find a way. Even when they haven't played well or at their best, they have found a way of beating us, and that is really frustrating.

There is something there. There is a performance where you can take a small positive in the fact that we have played quite well in large parts today. It is tough to take in that dressing room.

Returning to the starting XI…

It was good to be back out there and contributing, trying to make things happen, and being part of a good team performance. We just want to win games. This team is good enough to be up there, but we have to convert and stop conceding these easy goals.

The fantastic travelling support…

The fans backed us in huge numbers and were really loud. We wanted to give them something to go home and start the New Year off with something to shout about. They stuck with us throughout, and we responded to their atmosphere and what they created today. It’s huge for us; they come and back us all that way, and spend money and come and travel, and we have to start responding and getting these wins.

Moving on to Notts County on Sunday...

We want to get back to winning ways as soon as possible. We have a game on Sunday, which will be tough. We beat them earlier in the season, so we can go there and put a performance in and try to win the game. We have to win as soon as possible, and it is the next game. There is no point looking at all the other fixtures in January; we have to go to Notts County and believe that we can beat them.
