Nevitt | "Luck is going to turn"

Nev

Elliott Nevitt reiterated the importance of the squad sticking together after Gillingham's penalty shootout defeat to Newport County in the FA Cup First Round on Saturday.

The game ended 2-2 after extra time, with Nevitt opening the scoring in the fixture for his second goal of the season. The forward praised the team for their efforts in the game, admitting that losing in a penalty shootout left the squad gutted. However, he commended the players who were brave enough to step up and take a spot kick, regardless of the result.

Nevitt praised the performance of Jake Turner, who made several important saves throughout the game, even saving a penalty in the shootout. The goalkeeper had another save overturned for allegedly coming off his line too early. Nevitt also thanked the supporters for their fantastic efforts.

On the game and penalty shootout...

I feel like we are getting into the right positions and the luck is not on our side, but the lads that were on the pitch at the end kept going, and we got the goal. It was so harsh to go out on penalties. It was a killer, and all of the lads are gutted.

Seb's goal was brilliant. The shot and finish. We thought that was our luck turning, and we were going into penalties after scoring with the momentum. With the way that penalties are, you never know, do you? It's so harsh to not come away with the win.

You can't have a go at anyone that goes up to take a penalty. All the lads that took them today put their name forward, and there is nothing more that you can do. They were confident, and it is hard not scoring a penalty, but they were brave to go up. We will stick with them.

Sticking together as a squad...

We just need to stick together. There is nothing else that we can do except going onto the pitch and being a team and working together to try and win football games. Luck is going to turn; it is not always going to be like this. We need to stick together and take every game as it comes, and try to win every game.

Jake Turner's performance...

I thought that he was brilliant. He hasn't played a lot of football this year, but to come in and especially come in on a game that ends on penalties. I thought that he was brilliant, and I was gutted for him because I felt like he deserved the win. All the lads did as well, but especially him.

The travelling support...

They were brilliant all game and stuck with us. Even at the end, when we went over, they were clapping us, which they didn't have to. We haven't had the results lately, and they are sticking with us. Hopefully, they stick with us and we can have a turn.
