Armani Little felt that Gillingham more than deserved their hard-fought point following the 1-1 draw with Tranmere at Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Gills skipper was pleased to see the character the team showed throughout the game, as they battled until the very end against a solid Tranmere team that beat Shrewsbury 4-0 in their previous league fixture.
Omari Patrick scored the opening goal just after the hour, and the goal came with controversy as to whether it should have been disallowed for an offside in the build-up. Little discussed the group's mindset surrounding the incident and praised the players for how they bounced back to refocus.
Joe Gbode came off the bench to score the stoppage-time equaliser while Sam Gale had a strong game at right-back. Little praised the two academy graduates for the positive impact they are having on the pitch, as well as the passion they play with.
It is a quick turnaround for the Gills, who host Chesterfield at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Tuesday night. The midfielder looked ahead to what will be a difficult task.
Thoughts on the result...
I think that the point was fully deserved, to be fair. Obviously, we went a goal behind, but the character shown by the boys; they didn't give up, and their heads didn't drop. I think to come back and get a point and to score right at the end is brilliant. We will move on. We will take the point away from home and look forward to Tuesday's game.
When you get an equaliser that late, it almost does feel like a win sometimes, but we know we have taken a point. It's a point away from home again. They won 4-0 last week, so they are a good side. We will take the point.
On the Tranmere goal...
When we're on the pitch, we don't really know, but from the reaction from the bench, they have got an iPad to see. I think that the boys did really well to regroup and to try to forget about it. We bounced back, and we didn't stop trying to find that goal. I am proud of the boys.
The positive impact Sam Gale and Joe Gbode are having...
It's brilliant. You see the passion that they both play with. Galey has been brilliant all season. He has played centre-back and right-back. He keeps going on these mad runs down the wing, and you saw on Tuesday that he got a corner from it, and then we scored. Joe had that moment today. He had that one chance and he took it, so fair play to him, and it's a credit to themselves.
Looking towards Chesterfield...
We will go home and recover as well as we can. We will get ready on Monday to see what Chesterfield are going to throw at us. I am sure that we are going to be ready.
Chesterfield come on a good run of form. They have started the season really well. They are going to be strong contenders for the league. We will be ready for the challenge and will go full steam ahead. We will be ready to try and get the three points. We're back at home with the fans there. It should be good.
