Team News:

Gareth Ainsworth has hinted that there will be changes heading into Saturday’s fixture, with competition for places heating up. Sam Vokes and Garath McCleary could come back into the starting XI, having come off the bench in the midweek defeat at Chesterfield.

Cameron Antwi, Seb Palmer-Houlden, Ethan Coleman and Travis Akomeah will be pushing to be involved. Nelson Khumbeni and Conor Masterson remain out as they continue their recovery from their respective injuries.

Reagan Ogle is still not training and will miss the game for Oldham, as will their other absentees who have suffered longer-term injuries. Micky Mellon said that his team had a couple of bumps and bruises following their midweek win over Bristol Rovers, but there should be nothing to be concerned about.

Manager Comments:

Gareth Ainsworth: “Micky is a tough taskmaster. He will know what he wants from his team, and he will be working hard on that. He has an identity, and we will have to combat that.

“Likewise, I have my identity, my styles, my players, and my way of doing things. We will prepare the correct way, and hopefully on the pitch the boys can deliver.”

Micky Mellon: “It is always a tough place to go, but we know that if we can get everything right like we did on Tuesday night, then we give ourselves a good opportunity to go down there and get a result as well.”

Previous Meetings:

The two clubs have met on 50 occasions, with Oldham leading the head-to-head with 24 wins to Gillingham’s 18. The draw has occurred eight times.

Our first ever win against Oldham came at the Priestfield Stadium in October 1958. Jonny Edgar opened the scoring after 33 minutes from the penalty spot, before scoring a fine solo goal seven minutes later to make it two. Edgar went on a mazy run and did well to shrug off multiple challenges before sending a low shot past David Teece.

The game was turned on its head in the 66th minute when Oldham scored twice in quick succession to level the tie. Peter Neale scored first, heading home from a free-kick, then immediately from the restart, Albert Bourne’s strike from range beat John Simpson.

Gillingham eventually recovered from the shock of conceding twice in a minute and scored the winning goal with 15 minutes remaining. It came in a fortunate manner, as Gordon Pulley’s high-looping cross went goalward. Ted West got back onto the goal line to try to keep it out. However, he could only help it on its way into the back of the net, securing a 3-2 win for the Gills.
